Hello everyone. iv has a web site and new to create links to it for SEO, but have no idea where to start?

I am selling shoes (hopefully expand to other articles of clothing) and shoes eyed women and found the website above. Then they searched link: www.example.com and had 608 links to it (I think it's done.) So I need to say, as 609 links back to my site to beat. "I can put links back any were in the blogs. I join a company that links where I can put another link to my site to do the same for me. Is there such a thing as to many links back. Or it may damage my website. I've been doing research, but its all a bit confusing and I have no idea where to start. Sorry I'm a beginner. Thanks for your help.

After reading the responses so far, just had to leave a comment shortly. Why is everyone so afraid of Google? First, it is almost impossible to get banned from their index. Do you have to be doing some heavy stuff blackhat really even close, so do not worry about getting too many links too fast. But do not use link farms and do not pay anyone to submit your site to 100s of directories irrelevant, it's a scam. You will never compete with established sites for popular search phrases, do not bother trying. Get a good book in the keyword research. Find a few phrases of long tail keywords that people use when they are looking to buy something you sell. In other words, trying to forget the rank of "Women's Shoes" and guidance start phrases like "Discount Jimmy Choo Create multiple web 2.0 specific properties to each keyword term. Web 2.0 properties should link to your main site. Write and publish articles. Bookmark Web 2.0 for each property and each item in various social bookmarking services. Ping all. Repeat tomorrow and the next day and so on. Most importantly make sure your site converts visitors into customers principal otherwise the whole thing is a waste of time.
