SEO & Domain name question…?

If, for example, I want to optimise my site for the search phrase “web design uk”, is it better to have the domain name webdesignuk.com, or webdesign.co.uk?

Good question .I think you should use webdesignuk.com because the .com name is perceived as being more global as opposed to .co.uk.
However for better results here are some tips to search engine optimisation especially with google

…you should build your domain name with your main keyword….which you are trying to get done here
….Your main keyword should be in the header of your web page preferably the first line
….Your headline has should have the main keyword and this page should be hard coded
….You should also link your main keyword to an article content related to your keyword. I would suggest you write an article and get it published. this help to improve the rankings for your site.
bottom line is to have your main keyword in the relevant places and your domain name is one of them. a dot com name is better than a dotuk except you are targeting a local market
