How do I best optimze my site to show up in the top of Google for a certain term?
I’ve tried keywords, linking back and fourth, adding the keyword all over my front page and meta descriptions of “alt” text for images and even on the images that link back to my site.
Still, not even on the 3rd or 4th page for the term!
Any type of SEO software to recommend? What about something special I can add in my code?
First of all a warning: There is no quick fix for SEO. There are some tweaks you can make that will improve your rank a little bit but to get on page 1 for a good term it will take a lot of hard work or hiring an expert. There are no “SEO” applications that can get you to page 1. Each site is individual and needs a custom strategy. Beware of anyone who tells you they have a magic bullet solution. Don’t waste your money on these people. Trust me, I’ve been there and done that. The exception would be Aaron Walls SEO book, but that is a 300 page book that teaches you how to do things, not a quick fix.
You want to write good content that contains your keywords. You want your primary keywords in your title (this doesn’t mean a huge long title with every possible keyword in it, this means your one primary search phrase). And you want to repeat that phrase or variations of it in your text.
You want at least 500 words of text on your page and you want your search phrase to be 2-3% of that text. So you might want your search phrase to show up 15 times total on your page (including title, headers etc). Your meta keywords and meta description don’t effect your ranking at all.
Once you have taken care of these “on page” SEO tweaks it’s time to build links to your page that contain your search phrases. So if you were trying to rank for “my super duper keyword” you’d want to get links to your page with that text inside of the link (my super duper keyword). You don’t want to get everyone to link to you with that exact phrase because Google will see that as spam and diregard it. So you want a mix of keywords in the links that point to you.
Now your journey on the SEO path has just begun. You have a lot to learn if you want to show up on page 1 and do it all yourself. Or you can hire an SEO expert but that will cost you $3-4k to get one that knows what they are doing (don’t waist your money on people that aren’t experts in the industry).
