DIY SEO How to use Media Tags for higher ranking

DIY Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)- how to use media (video, picture, PDF, and sound) tags to help boost your Google ranking.

SEO is a great start to getting yourself found faster on the internet. Here are some simple tips to help you get better rankings in search engines- tips which allow you to do it yourself.

This is one part in a series of articles- today you’ll briefly hear about utilising your primary keywords in media tags.

In this article on Search Engine Optimization you’ll need your keywords which you researched earlier- a combination of keywords, keyword phrases, and long tail keywords. It’s fine to use more then 6 sets but for clarity and consistency you’ll want only six to be your key key words.

Search engines judge a webpage’s relevance by the text inside it. They can’t read the contents of videos and pictures so it’s up to you to tell the spiders what they are. By labelling media content with an appropriate description girded with your keywords- you can help your pages be more relevant. Pictures can be labelled the alt tag and some parts of Flash can be indexed by Google (as long as the textual content isn’t changed by ActionScript).

Some parts of a Flash file’s SWF are indexed by Google: frames with static text inside them, prefilled dynamic textfields (from Flash’s IDE), and some content in Flex. If the Flash also sources an external txt file then that file’s contents are also indexed. Go into the source and tag the flash movie properly so it still be known by browsers who can’t read flash (like iPhones).

Video’s are also easy to tag- Google has a page devoted to the subject. The title of a video is critical, it should contain your keyword(s) while being as direct and exact as possible. The description should also contain your keywords and be as precise as possible. Many places have limits as to descriptions and title lengths so be sure to research/decide where you want your video hosted before embarking on it. When embedding it in a page be sure to use your tags as efficiently as possible as the more descriptive/accurate you get the more search engines will understand what your site is about.

PDF’s can be indexed as long as they were created from typed material and not simply scanned. This means that you write your document (using Word, iWork, or any similar word processing program) with the end in mind. Before converting your document to PDF (through the native capabilities of the Apple operating system or through Adobe products) be sure to Search Engine Optimise your document appropriately as Google can read inside the PDF’s. You can also change the properties of the PDF to include the author’s name, title, subject, keywords etc. Info can be added before it is printed, it may also be added afterwards if such editing isn’t locked out.

To optimise audio you can change the ID3 tags of each audio file with the appropriate information as well as optimising the page where your audio is hosted. HTML 5, which is currently in development, allows for additional tags added to audio as well as video and pictures.

Bill Gates once said “Information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don’t think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other”.

This means the better you can increase your presence over the internet the greater you can increase your business. Search Engine Optimisation is one way to do that. (SEO is a complex and many faceted activity designed to help promote your business but there are some simple steps available if you have direct access to your webpage source code or can get someone to do it for you).

There are many ways to adjust your site to improve it’s ranking on search engines but for mass effect and to reach more people then those who are simply searching on Google you should extending your exposure. And that’s where we come in. Traditional Search Engine Optimisation is a good start but it doesn’t take into account the preferences of Google (and the other engine’s following in it’s wake). By employing those who keep track of such switches you are able to reach out to more people and guide them to you.
